Herbs for Postpartum Recovery

Updated: Jan 5

As a birth worker who has attended countless births over the past 10 years, I've recognized the lack in postpartum care and a lack in the resources available to women. The idea to create a postpartum box came to me when I was attending births as a birth assistant, helping moms set up their v-steaming area and blending their herbs. I started to see a need for other healing tools to go along with the vaginal steaming, like herbal massage oils, teas, tinctures and bath salts. Taking a holistic approach to postpartum care allows for healing beyond the physical. It was important for me to fill these care boxes with herbal infused products that would actually be beneficial and have practical use (not that a chanel gift bag wouldn't be nice but, practical? meh.)

This herbal postpartum care package is essential for healing rapidly and safely. Taking good care of yourself by reintroducing warmth into your womb for the first 40 days postpartum will ensure that you fully heal!

Get yours here. Here's a list of what's in the Auset Herbals postpartum care boxes, packed with lots of love!:

Herbal Womb Healing Tincture

This glycerin based tincture nourishes the blood & helps to tone the uterus postpartum. The herbs help to regulate hormones, improve mood, improve energy and improve uterine circulation. As a daily supplement, the tincture provides you with the necessary nutrients to stay healthy while breastfeeding and cleansing all birth matter. This blend helps maintain progesterone levels up by providing vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Magnesium and Zinc! Take 15-20 drops (1-2x a day) under the tongue, or dilute into a shot glass of water and drink.

Includes: Achiote Seeds (Bixa orellana), White Peony root (Paeonia lactiflora), Nettle leaf (Urtica dioica), Dandelion leaf (Taraxacum officinale), Red Raspberry Leaf (Rubus idaeus), Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca), Chaste Berry (Vitex agnus-castus), Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)

Herbal Postpartum Tea

This herbal tea blend has many womb healing & nutritional herbs to help nourish your womb. The herbs will help to warm you up from the inside out, while toning and strengthening the uterus!

Boil 1 cup of water, add a teaspoon of the tea, remove from heat and let the herbs infuse in water for 10 minutes, covered. Strain and enjoy! * Optional: add the sweetener of your choice (do not heat up honey as the heat kills most of its nutrients. Instead, use brown sugar, date syrup or xylitol and eat the honey raw instead!)

Includes: Rosehip (Rosa rubiginosa), Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), Red Raspberry Leaf (Rubus idaeus), Nettle Leaf (Urtica dioica), Hibiscus Flower (Hibiscus sabdariffa)

Vaginal Steaming Herbal Blend

Vaginal Steaming is used as a traditional practice worldwide by midwives and birth workers during the 6 week postpartum period to aid in the healing of the womb. This is what the body needs to accomplish after birth to properly and thoroughly heal, all which can be healed with the support of v-steaming:

  • Closing the vaginal canal and cervix to its pre-birth size

  • Uterus cleans and clears out the leftover lochia (pregnancy matter)

  • Reduce uterus down to pre-birth size

  • Return the abdominal organs into their correct places so they can continue to work and eliminate feces and urine

  • Heal any tears or stitches

  • Retract the abdominal skin

  • Reintroduction of warmth into the womb

  • Shed leftover pregnancy weight

Includes: Chamomile, Hibiscus, Bay Leaf, Motherwort, Red Raspberry Leaf, White Sage, Calendula, Slippery elm, mugwort, scullcap

Nipple Butter

Safe for you and baby, this whipped nipple butter helps prevent chapped & dry nipples. Keep your nipples moisturized in between breastfeeding sessions! Doubles as a lip moisturizer and overall skin moisturizer.

Includes: Mango Butter, Cacao Butter, Chamomile, Olive Oil

Herbal Perineal Spray

Chamomile and peppermint will soothe and cool your perineum and vaginal area after birth and help reduce swelling. The witch hazel will act as an astringent, helping to tighten the skin while also cleansing. Spray your vulva as needed, after a bath and after using the toilet.

Includes: Witch Hazel, Distilled Water, Chamomile, Peppermint Essential Oil

Herbal Body Oil

Full body massages are a must postpartum to help with circulation and organ rearrangement. Have your partner or doula rub you down at least once everyday. This herbal infused oil has Chamomile & Calendula to calm the nerves and to moisturize and nourish the skin.

Includes: Olive Oil, Chamomile, Calendula

Herbal Bath Salts

A relaxing bath at least once a week will ensure you don’t lose your sh*t with a new baby and help your body heal faster. These bath salts are infused with Chamomile and lavender for further relaxation.

Includes: Epsom Salt, Lavender, Chamomile

Postpartum healing info sheet, Instructions & A Personal Note

Along with all of the herbal goodies just mentioned, I also include a pamphlet with tips on healing mind, body and spirit postpartum. Every box also comes with a personal reading to empower and uplift mom in times of struggle. Many women have found these notes to be just what they needed to hear whenever they get overwhelmed.

After birth, the postpartum care provided by modern western medicine is minimal. It often results in a 24 hour (or less) stay in the hospital and then a standard 6-week checkup. In between that time, no additional support is given with recovery unless the mother needs medical assistance based on severe symptoms.

During this 6 week period that she is sent home, her body is tasked with healing itself.

Healthcare professionals in western medicine may be missing something by blindly suppressing this universal health practice rather than researching its potential benefits.

Is one postpartum check-up at 6 weeks really enough to support you during such an extensive recovery period?

Heck no.
